Eleanor Miller Ormond

Eleanor Miller Ormond

Eleanor M Ormond died on December 5, 2006, after a brief illness.

Eleanor was an active participant and leader in many facets of Savannah life. She was deeply involved in the life of Christ Church, participating in such varied activities as teaching Sunday School, working on the Altar Guild, and chairing governing committees. She had the honor of being the first woman elected to the vestry and later was its first female senior warden.

For many years she took leadership roles in the Savannah Tour of Homes and Gardens. She was a member of the Savannah Garden Club and was one of the founders of the Fragrant Garden for the Blind in Forsyth Park. Among her many other civic activities, she was a volunteer with Hospice of Savannah, Candler Hospital, and a children’s musical theater, and in the 1950’s was prominent in an anti-litter campaign, playing the role of a talking trash can.

She was born in Brunswick in 1919 and lived in several cities throughout the south before settling in Savannah after World War II. Her first husband, Philip Wilheit, died in the South Pacific in WWII. In 1951 she married Alex Ormond of Savannah, who preceded her in death in December, 2000.

During the past five years she suffered from progressive Alzheimer’s disease, but even when her memory was no longer intact, she continued to delight in the world and lighten the world for others with the pure kindness, humor, and graciousness for which she was known.

Eleanor is survived by her children Ellen Meredith Ormond, Alexander Clark Ormond Jr, Barbara Ahlers Ormond, and Randolph Thomas Ormond, and by her six grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Church at 10:30 AM on Saturday, Dec 9.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be sent to Hospice of Savannah, P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416
